Indonesia has warned its citizens not to work as maids in Malaysia because there are too many cases of mistreatment. – File photo
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 – Indonesia today said its citizens should not work as maids in Malaysia, following the latest case of mistreatment of close to a hundred of its nationals here.
“The Malaysian authorities should take tough action ... It’s better for Indonesian maids not to work in Malaysia.
“They (Malaysia) are asking for Indonesian maids, but they cannot protect them well,” Indonesian embassy spokesman Suryana Sastradiredja was quoted as saying by AFP.
Last Saturday, local immigration authorities rescued 105 foreign nationals who were locked up in a maid agency’s building in Bandar Baru Klang.
The women, who reportedly do not have work passes and includes 95 Indonesians, were alleged made to work as maids for months without being paid the promised salary of RM700.
They claimed that the agency treated them badly and limited the food given to them.
Indonesia had in 2009 imposed a ban on the sending of its nationals to work as maids in Malaysia due to cases of abuse, but lifted it last December.
But maids from Indonesia have only slowly trickled in to Malaysia despite the lifting of the ban, with Sastradiredja saying that less than 100 of them had arrived here through official channels.
Sastradiredja also said Indonesia is afraid that thousands of its nationals could have been tricked and lured by promises of well-paying jobs to enter Malaysia illegally and are working in vulnerable conditions.
New reports of abuse of Indonesian nationals have surfaced last month, with a restaurant worker alleging that she was gang-raped by three policemen in Penang and another alleged rape of a 15-year-old maid by her employer.
Late last month, Malaysia’s Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam told Parliament that the country continues to have a good and healthy relationship with Indonesia despite such incidents.
He had appeared to blame the Indonesian media and non-governmental organisations for using such incidents as “emotive issues”.
He added that swift action on such cases would send out a message to tell foreign workers that they will have protection through the legal system.
In August, observers told The Malaysian Insider that higher salaries in other countries and a strong Indonesian economy have made Malaysia a less attractive country for Indonesian maids.
Indonesian maids in Malaysia get a minimum pay of RM650, while the minimum allowable wage for them in Singapore and Hong Kong is respectively S$450 (RM1,126) and HK$3,740 (RM1,500).
They also get mandatory days off in Singa
